What do college coaches look for when recruiting basketball players?

I have got a lot of emails and questions lately about what college coaches look for when recruiting college basketball players. I decided to give you some valuable information that I think will help parents and players understand where they stand during the recruiting process.

We will start with the DIVISION 1 NCAA

NCAA D1 Point guard.
A point guards height should be about 6’0. The point guard should have great ball handling skills, great passing skills, and the ability to knock down open shots from the perimeter. The guard should display exceptional floor leadership and excellent court awareness. He or she should also show exceptional athleticism and lateral quickness with the ability to break defenders down off the dribble. A minimum of 12 points per game should be required.

NCAA D1 Shooting guard
The height should be about 6’2. The shooting guard should be an exceptional shooter from the perimeter. He should be very athletic with very good lateral quickness. Shooting guards should have ball handling skills, and good passing skills. The must show the ability to score the basketball from different areas on the floor. They must have court awareness and the ability to break defenders down off the dribble. A minimum of 12 points per game should be required.

NCAA D1 Small Forward
The height should be 6’4 and have extremely athletic with good lateral quickness. They must be very versatile and show all around skills. He should show the ability to score the basketball from different areas on the floor. A minimum of 12 points per game is required

NCAA D1 Power Forward
The height should be 6’7 with the ability to play with back to the basket or facing the basket. A must is to have very good rebounding skills and be very athletic showing the ability to run the floor extremely well. A minimum of 12 points per game.

NCAA D1 Center
Should be around 6’9 with the ability to play with back to the basket and have good rebounding skill. Also should be have the ability to run the floor extremely well. Must be very athletic averaging a minumum of 12 points per game with the exception of student-athletes who are 6’10 and above

NCAA DIVISION II

NCAA D2 Point Guard
Typically about 5’11. Very good ball handling skills. Very good passing skills. Ability to knock down open shots from the perimeter. Displays very good floor leadership. Excellent court awareness. Very good athleticism and lateral quickness. Ability to break defenders down off the dribble. Minimum of 12 points per game.

Shooting Guard
Usually 6’1 with the ability to be a shooter from the perimeter. Needs to show good athleticism with very good lateral quickness with good ball handling skills, and good passing skills.Must show the ability to score the basketball from different areas on the floor. Good court awareness. Ability to break defenders down off the dribble with a minimum of 12 points per game.

Small Forward
Typical average height of 6’4 with very athletic with good lateral quickness. They must be versatile all around skills and the ability to score the basketball from different areas on the floor. Must show the ability to break defenders down off the dribble. Minimum of 12 points per game is usually required.

Power Forward
Usually about 6’6 with the ability to play with back to the basket or facing the basket.Very good rebounding skills, and the ability to run the floor well, with a minimum of 12 points per game

Center
6’7 with the ability to play with back to the basket. They should show very good rebounding skills. ability to run the floor and be athletic. Minimum of 12 points per game with the exception of student-athletes 6’8 and above.

NCAA DIVISION III

NCAA D3 Point Guard
Should be about 5’8 Good ball handling skills, good passing skills, ability to knock down open shots from the perimeter. Displays good floor leadership, good court awareness, athleticism and lateral quickness, ability to break defenders down off the dribble, and a minimum of 10 points per game.

NCAA D3 Shooting Guard
Usually 5’11 and be an exceptional shooter from the perimeter. Should be very athletic with good lateral quickness, good ball handling skills, good passing skills, and the ability to score the basketball from different areas on the floor. Also should show good court awareness and the ability to break defenders down off the dribble with a minimum of 10 points per game.

NCAA D3 Small Forward
Usually 6’2 and athletic, versatile all-around skills. ability to score the basketball from different areas on the floor, ability to break defenders down off the dribble with a minimum of 10 points per game.

D3 Power Forward
6’4 ability to play with back to the basket, good rebounding skills, athletic with the ability to run the floor well, minimum of 10 points per game.

D3 Center
6’5 with the ability to play with back to the basket, good rebounding skills, ability to run the floor well, athletic with a minimum of 10 points per game with the exception of student athletes who are 6’7 and above.

NAIA DIVISION I

NAIA D1 Point Guard
5’11 Very good ball handling skills, every good passing skills, ability to knock down open shots from the perimeter, displays good floor leadership, very good court awareness, very good athleticism and lateral quickness, ability to break defenders down off the dribble, minimum of 12 points per game.

NAIA D1 Shooting Guard
6’1 Exceptional shooter from the perimeter, very good athleticism with very good lateral quickness, good ball handling skills,, good passing skills, ability to score the basketball from different areas on the floor, good court awareness, ability to break defenders down off the dribble, minimum of 12 points per game.

NAIA D1 Small Forward
6’3, Very athletic with good lateral quickness, versatile all-around skills, ability to score the basketball from different areas on the floor, ability to break defenders down off the dribble, minimum of 12 points per game.

NAIA D1 Power Forward
6’4 with the ability to play with back to the basket or facing the basket, very good rebounding skills, very athletic, ability to run the floor well, minimum of 12 points per game

NAIA D1 Center
6’7 with the ability to play with back to the basket, very good rebounding skills, ability to run the floor well, very athletic, minimum of 12 PPG with the exception of student-athletes who are 6’9″ and above
